Jobs' passing elicited remarks from tech elites, celebrities and politicians. Here are just a few:
Mark Zuckerberg: "Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you."
President Barack Obama: "Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.
By building one of the planet's most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun."
Former Governor of Massachusetts and Republican presidential candidate in a tweet: "Steve jobs is an inspiration to American entrepreneurs. He will be missed."
Google CEO Larry Page, posting on Google+: "I am very, very sad to hear the news about Steve. He was a great man with incredible achievements and amazing brilliance. He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me. He was very kind to reach out to me as I became CEO of Google and spend time offering his advice and knowledge even though he was not at all well. My thoughts and Google's are with his family and the whole Apple family."

Pre-orders for iPhone 4S top 1 million in 24 hours
Apple says the number of pre-orders for the iPhone 4S -- which launches this Friday -- topped 1 million in the first 24 hours. The record is well ahead of the previous mark set by the iPhone 4 last year with 600,000, Apple said in a statement Monday.
"We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of product marketing, in a statement.
The iPhone 4S opened up to pre-orders on Oct. 7 for AT&T, Verizon and the newly-added Sprint.
The staggering pre-order figures were achieved despite a mixed reaction to the iPhone 4S when it was revealed last Tuesday. Although the smartphone adds a faster processor, beefed-up camera and the voice-activated personal assistant Siri, several reports had suggested a more significant upgrade was in the works.
Apple will also launch its iOS 5 operating system for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad owners Oct. 12. The upgrade adds a notifications system, a Reminders app, Twitter integration and more features for the camera and photo apps.
