Picture of the Day: Peak-A-Boo!

PEAK-A-BOO!

Photograph by DOUGLAS TANNER

Great capture by photographer Douglas Tanner of a raccoon in Stanley Park, Vancouver, Canada. Camera and lens was a Canon EOS T1i with a Sigma 50mm f/1.4. Those little buggers are cute and crafty; we have tons of them in Toronto and you have to admire their survival skills in the concrete jungle.

Aakash Tablet Version 2.0

By February 2012, an improved and more competent Aakash-2, world’s most affordable tablet PC, is expected to be launched at the same price as its previous version. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Rajasthan has confirmed the improvements made in Aakash-1, which was launched on October 5. HRD minister Kapil Sibal said that new version of Aakash will be launched during January-February, 2012.
Aakash has got an ample response internationally, when exhibited at a recent United Nations conference in Paris. Aakash has shown so much of interest among several international organizations and world leaders. HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said. “Several prime ministers and ministers have evinced interest in Aakash who want it for their country in thousands,” he told media correspondents without elaborating.
The Aakash-2, based on response from more than 500 users of Aakash-1 in IITs and many other institutions, will include microprocessor of 800MHz instead of 366MHz processor. It will improve the speed of the tablet and will enable downloading videos from internet.
The RAM (Random Access Memory) of the Aakash-2 will be enhanced to 1GB from 256 MB in Aakash-1 that restricted multi-tasking.
A senior professor at IIT Rajasthan, who is leading the Aakash team, said that changes would increase the performance of the tablet and would be more competent to the existing tablet PCs in the market.
In order to make Aakash-2 smarter, the IIT Rajasthan has decided to include a built-in camera to it, to ensure video chatting facility to its users. It also will include a seven-inch touch screen for a better look.
This version is a result of feedback from IIT students, who tested Aakash-1, and claimed some of the problems of the current version, which include frequent hanging, overheating within 30 minutes, not supporting all formats, poor sound quality, and lack of ability to install software available online.
Though the Aakash-2 will be available by February 2012, to meet the government’s target of supplying it to 2 million students is still a challenge.
“We have to evolve an eco-system of several vendors and its testing by IITs and other institutes to provide an Aakash to each child by 2017 (end of 12th plan),” a senior HRD ministry official said.
As in case of Aakash-1, where companies like London based DataWind, India based Quad came together, the government believes that Aakash-2 will make a bigger collaboration
As the HRD Minister Sibal said that several international organizations and world ministers have shown interest to purchase Aakash for the children world-wide, this collaboration will be very essential. The minister, who has been marketing Aakash since its launch, also said. “There is a lot of global buzz about Aakash and we have to meet the global expectation”.

Windows 8 Branded PCs Could Prevent Other Operating Systems From Being Installed

“Secure Boot” is a new Windows 8 technology that’s required of OEM computers if they are to feature the Windows 8 Compatibility Logo. It’s designed to protect against malware at the boot level by preventing ‘unauthorised’ code from launching during system boot. However it’s been revealed that it may also prevent non Windows 8 operating systems – such as Linux – from being able to install or run.

How Does It Work?

Newer PCs are increasingly using a replacement for the old BIOS called UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). It’s a technology that’s been built into Apple Macs for years now, but basically it allows for faster boot and more efficient hardware access by the operating system. It’s also the main reason OSX is difficult to install on PCs, so if you have any hackintosh experience you’ll know about having to run an EFI emulation.
The UEFI specification contains a firmware validation method, which works by defining certificate keys for which boot code is ‘secure’ and therefore allowed to run during boot. Microsoft supplies these keys to manufacturers, who include it on their machines, and only boot code which has a corresponding secure key is allowed to boot.
windows 8 limitations
windows 8 blocks linux
Basically this prevents malware from launching at a boot level, so it’s potentially mitigated a large number of security threats. The problem with malware that runs at the boot level is that it’s very difficult for regular anti-malware to protect against or remove, as by the time the anti-malware app has loaded (after windows boot), it’s already there.

Unfortunately, with Secure Boot enabled, you’ll also be prevented from launching any boot code for which for the machine doesn’t have the appropriate certificate keys. Now, it is entirely possible for other organisations to provide secure keys to manufacturers – like a set of keys for Ubuntu for example – but manufacturers are under absolutely no obligation to incorporate these; and without them, the other OS just won’t install or boot.
So is it time to say goodbye to installing another OS?

Microsoft’s Response

In response to the concerns that this might prevent other operating systems from being installed, Microsoft has stated that secure boot is optional, and can be turned off from within the pre-boot setup screen. Here’s a screenshot from the MSDN Windows 8 blog post on the topic, clearly showing it’s optional on the Windows-8 based Samsung tablet that was offered to //BUILD/ participants where Windows 8 was first demoed.
windows 8 blocks linux

So, End Of Story?

Not entirely it would seem. As Matthew Garret notes:
Windows 8 certification does not require that the user be able to disable UEFI secure boot, and we’ve already been informed by hardware vendors that some hardware will not have this option.
That’s right – although some manufacturers may choose to make the Secure Boot setting optional and therefore able to be disabled by the user – gaining certifications for Windows 8 compatibility does not require it, and some have explicitly stated it will not be optional on their machines (though there are no details on precisely which manufacturers have stated this yet).
Microsoft has thrown the ball to the manufacturers court, and it could go either way. The PC business is incredibly competitive, so getting that Windows logo is all important, that’s a given. On the one hand, manufacturers will be keen to offer the best computing experience to the majority of their customers and if that means mitigating yet another security threat (and the inevitable support calls they need to deal with boot-level malware), then they’ll go for it. Other operating systems can still be run, if they provide certificate keys and if the manufacturers agree to include them. On the other hand, I suspect a real PR backlash will be forthcoming against any PC makers that do decide to force Secure Boot onto the user, so it may be a non-issue in the end.

What Can You Do About It?

The Free Software Foundation is running a petition encouraging computer makers to support Secure Boot in a way which ensures the user has control – specifically, the option to turn it off entirely. Be sure to head over and sign now if you’re at all interested in consumer freedoms and the right to run alternative operating systems on your own PC.

How to use Bluetooth technology to connect laptop and cell phone?

We can use Bluetooth technology to connect laptop and cell phone. We can move videos, images, photos etc from  desktop computer or a laptop to our cell phones. In order to use Bluetooth technology to connect laptop and cell phone we need a laptop and a cell phone which support this technology. Trywebhosting
If the laptop doesn't support it, we can use a USB Bluetooth dongle.  Just plug it into the USB port of the desktop computer or laptop. Leave the rest to Microsoft Windows. It will find the driver and install it itself.  If it is not supported, we can manually install it via the manufacturer's compact disk. Follow these simple steps in order to use Bluetooth technology to connect laptop and cell phone: (In this example, we are using Windows Vista.)
Turn on the Bluetooth feature on your cell phone.
Make this setting:  my Phone's visibility -> Shown to all on the cell phone.
Open Bluetooth Devices by clicking on its icon in the Control Panel.
OR
Look for the Bluetooth driver in the Device Manager and double-click on its icon.
Click on the Add button in Bluetooth Devices dialog box.
Check the box for "My devices is set up and ready to be found" in the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard dialog box.
Click on the Next button.
This device wizard will display the name of the found Bluetooth device close by.
Click on the device name that you would like to add and click on Next.
Select "Let me choose my own key" or "Choose a passkey for me" and click on Next.
It will now display the passkey. Key this into the cell phone. Now the laptop is initiating to install the Bluetooth device. (Click Yes as you see the prompt message on the cell phone to allow connection with the laptop.)
Click on the Finish button to close the dialog box of Add Bluetooth Device Wizard.
The Bluetooth device (the cell phone) is now displayed in Bluetooth Devices dialog box. Select the Bluetooth device and click on the Properties button.
The Properties dialog box for the device will become visible. Choose the Services tab.
Check the boxes for the services you want.
In the end you can launch the items of the cell phone.  Transfer photos, videos etc to cell phone via Bluetooth technology.
This method can also be used to connect laptop to Bluetooth devices like Bluetooth mouse, Bluetooth keyboard, Bluetooth headset, etc.

The Unbelievable Price of the Aakash Tablet

When news of the Aakash Tablet first made headlines, it appeared to be no less than a myth. The device itself was not a question of debate; it was the cost of the computing device that raised many an eyebrow, within the country as well as overseas. The device was touted to be priced at around $35 and that appeared to be a fairy tale.
Aakash Tablet Price for Students – Expected to be Rs.1500-1750 (After Rs.750 subsidy by the government, only for students)
Aakash Tablet Price in Retail Market – Rs. 3000 (inclusive of all taxes)
Note: Aakash Tablet in the retail market is called as Datawind Ubislate and it will have added features when compared to the student’s version.
Cost Breakup
The Aakash Tablet is priced at an unbelievably affordable price, which is just Rs 2,276 when converted in to Indian money. The price is inclusive of all the taxes that are levied on such products by the Government of India. Though the Aakash Tablet exceeds the originally quoted price of $35, it is still priced low and within the means of the masses.
The device is the result of the arduous efforts by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development which decided on developing a computing device which could be used by students across the country. Their initiative paid dividends and the result is the world’s cheapest Tablet.
The breakdown price of the device is as follows –
  • Originally quoted price – $ 35
  • Cost of manufacturing the device – $ 37.98
  • Cost of warranty, transportation and miscellaneous costs $ 12
The total adds up to $ 49.98, which is the final cost of the computing device. The Government of India will provide subsidy to institutions which will enable them to distribute the computing device to the students at half the cost.
The computing device was designed and manufactured by DataWind, a British firm in alliance with IIT with the support of (NME-ICT) National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology that comes under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resources and Development.
DataWind is supplying the HRD ministry 100,000 tablets for only Rs 2,250 per component, and the price is inclusive of freight charges and taxes. Further, after the successful launching of the computing device in India, the (OLPC) One Laptop per Child chairman Mr. Nicholas Negroponte has extended an offer of giving India the access to all the OLPC technology free of cost for all future innovations and products
The computing device is compact and it is 25.5 cm long and 12.5 cm wide. The device has been examined by leading analyst and found to be working as good as any other computing device.
The specifications of Aakash Tablet are as under
  • Screen – 7” resistive
  • Operating System – Android 2.2
  • Processor  - 366 MHz in addition to Graphics Accelerator and HD Video Co-processor
  • Storage – 2GB Flash Memory with 2GB Micro SD card which is expandable up to 32GB
  • Memory -256 MB RAM
  • Network – Wi-Fi Enabled
  • Connectivity – 2 USB ports
  • Battery – 2100mAh
  • Web Browser – DataWind Accelerated Browser
  • Modem – Inbuilt cellular and Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)
To sum it up the configuration of Aakash is perfect for students. At the price at which it is being made available to students it will be possible for every student in India to own a computing device and become computer literate.

number of visitors for social networking sites

Number of visitors per day

We found 29 social networks that currently have one million or more unique visitors per day. For traffic data, we used Google Trends for Websites.
Note that these numbers are estimates made by Google from a variety of data sources, so they will not be 100% correct, but should still give us a good idea of how the sites compare.
Social networks with at least one million site visitors per day
A few quick observations:
  • Facebook has stated that about half of its users log in to the site every day, which seems to match these numbers.
  • It’s interesting that Orkut, counted out by many, clocks in a significant number of daily visitors. From this perspective, it’s the second-largest social network in the world. This is in large part due to it’s extremely strong following in Brazil and to a somewhat lesser extent, India.
  • How the mighty have fallen. MySpace is only number 12 on this list. (And speaking of the fallen, Friendster didn’t even make the list.)
  • Facebook dominates to an almost ridiculous extent. Combine all the daily visitors for the other 28 social networks on this list and you still only end up with two-thirds of what Facebook has.

The social networks, one by one

For those of you interested in learning more about each network, including the trend of its traffic (some are growing, some are stable, some are losing ground), read on. We’ll go through all of them here below.

Facebook

Needs no introduction, really. As you could see in the chart above, the daily activity at the Facebook website makes all other sites look small. It should be noted that about 200+ million of Facebook’s 600 million users also use one of Facebook’s mobile apps, which won’t show up here. Launched in 2004.
traffic trend
Still no sign of Facebook’s growth slowing down, is there?

Orkut

Google’s entry in the social network field (not counting Google Buzz). Not big in most of the world, but a massive success in Brazil and to a lesser extent, India. Launched in 2004.
traffic trend

Qzone

China’s largest social network, launched by Tencent in 2005.
traffic trend

Twitter

Another site that really needs no introduction, at least to the readers of this blog. It should be noted that these results may be a bit unfair to Twitter since people to a large extent use applications to access Twitter and don’t necessarily surf to the Twitter.com website so much. Launched in 2006.
traffic trend

Odnoklassniki

A Russian social network for classmates and old friends (“odnoklassniki” means “classmates”). Launched in 2006.
traffic trend

LinkedIn

A business-oriented social network that you’re probably already well aware of. Launched in 2003.
traffic trend

vKontakte

A popular Russian social network that is often described as a Russian Facebook clone. Launched in 2006.
traffic trend

Badoo

A social networking site that originated in Russia but is now most popular in several Latin American countries, as well as France, Italy and Spain. Launched in 2006.
traffic trend

Mixi

Japan’s premier social network, launched in 2004.
traffic trend

Flickr

Some may think of Flickr as just a photo-sharing site, but it’s always had a strong social element and is listed as a social network in Wikipedia, so we included it here. Launched in 2004.
traffic trend

Hi5

A social network with a global audience, although an extra large share of its users come from Thailand, Mexico, Romania and Peru. Launched in 2003.
traffic trend

Myspace

The former number one social network is not faring so well at the moment, at least when you think about how successful it once was. Launched in 2003.
traffic trend

Nasza Klasa

A Polish social network for students and alumni (the name means “our class”). Launched in 2006.
traffic trend
If you’re wondering about the oddly shaped graph, it’s because the site switched to nk.pl from a different domain name (explaining that sharp rise).

Tuenti

Another site that basically got its start as a local Facebook copy, this time in Spain. It’s often referred to as the “Spanish Facebook.” Launched in 2006.
traffic trend

Hyves

The most popular social network in the Netherlands. Launched in 2004.
traffic trend

Renren

Another popular Chinese social network. Renren literally means “everyone.” Launched in 2005 under the name Xiaonei.
traffic trend
The “late start” in the graph is because that’s when the site changed both its name and its domain name.

Tagged

A social network launched in 2004, somewhat infamous for rather spammy invitation email practices a couple of years ago.
traffic trend

Taringa!

An Argentinian social network available in Spanish and Portuguese. Much of its traffic comes from Latin American countries and Spain. Launched in 2004.
traffic trend

Cyworld

A South Korea-based social network mainly active in South Korea, but it also has operations in China and Vietnam. Launched in 1999.
traffic trend

Netlog

A social network mainly targeted at European youth. Launched in 2003.

traffic trend

Sonico

A social network aimed mainly at a Latin American audience. Launched in 2007.
traffic trend

Douban

A Chinese social network where users discuss and review movies, books and music. Launched in 2005.

Could the Taj Mahal Really Collapse?

Local officials in Agra claim that the Taj Mahal might collapse in the next three to five years. Above, policemen patrolled through the Yamuna river besides Taj Mahal, Agra, Aug 21.
The white marble complex is undoubtedly India’s most-recognizable monument, inevitably featuring in the itinerary of most tourists and visiting heads of state (with the exception of U.S. President Barack Obama.)
It is understandable, then, that when the Daily Mail, the British tabloid, reported last week that the Taj Mahal risked collapsing, panic ensued.
But is there really reason to worry?
The alarm bells were first raised by Ramshankar Katheria, Agra MP for the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party. If he is to be believed, the monument built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz could collapse within three to five years. It’s not just the future of the monument that is at stake but that of India as a whole, Mr. Katheria told India Real Time in a recent interview. “India’s pride is in grave danger,” he said.
Mr. Katheria says the wooden foundations of the Mughal-era mausoleum, buried deep within the river Yamuna, are decaying due to the river’s receding water level. “The foundation is such that the water flow strengthens its hold to shoulder the monument,” he explained. “Not only are wooden planks loosening but (they) are also rotting due to lack of moisture in their surface,” he added.
He is the pioneer of the “Taj Bachao Sang,” or “Save the Taj Together” campaign, an initiative launched last year to protect the memorial. The campaign’s team, which includes historians and archeologists, also allege that cracks have emerged on the monument’s surface and that several minarets are showing signs of tilting. “Our conclusions are based on a systematic year-long research,” said the MP.
This is an issue Mr. Katheria has discussed with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pratibha Patil. “Promises were made during these meetings but not followed by tangible results from their end,” he said. “Our only request is that a strict enquiry is issued into the matter. Is that too much to ask for?”
Spokesmen for the Prime Minister were not immediately reachable for comment.
Other experts, however, disagree with Mr. Katheria’s assessment. The Archaeological Survey of India, the state-run agency in charge of preserving the monument, slammed these claims. “These are shameless publicity stunts deployed to attract media attention,” a senior ASI official based in Agra told India Real Time. He said this was a “pointless alarm” and the issue of the foundations was being “over exaggerated.” The official said that, following media reports, an ASI team of engineers and archaeologists went to examine the site and that “no major threat was detected.” He said the ASI “is undertaking all necessary measures to safeguard the Taj Mahal.”
A spokesman for Mr. Katheria said that his Taj Mahal campaign is in the broader national interest and that there is “no political agenda” behind it. He declined to comment on whether Mr. Katheria plans to run for upcoming elections in his home state of Uttar Pradesh, slated for 2012.
Ruknuddin Mirza, a conservation archeologist at the Indian National Trust For Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), also questioned Mr. Katheria’s alarmism. “Though it is of utmost importance to investigate these allegations, time and again ASI has substantiated their worth in preserving cultural heritage” he said.
This is not the first time the Taj Mahal has fallen prey to controversy. In the early 1980s, activist Mahesh Chander Mehta said pollution was damaging the white marble structure. It took around a decade before authorities backed his claims, with the Supreme Court ordering factories in and around Agra to be shut down.
